Radio Strawberry, Social Radio 2016
For more than thirty years Radio Fragola has been active with its cultural programs. Always committed to social issues, always attentive to the needs of the citizens of Trieste and beyond. It therefore seemed obvious that this station would win the Silver Headphones award as best Radio Social 2016. Yet both the organizational director Lucia Vazzoler and the technical manager Francesco Candura seemed very surprised and moved when we contacted them for an interview. "The Silver Headphones award as the best Social Radio is a recognition that arrived in a completely unexpected way" says Lucia. “On the other hand, perhaps for Radio Fragola it was time for a national recognition. Especially after thirty years of social work ”adds Francesco. Their young, smiling and slightly excited faces are perhaps the image that better than any other can describe this radio station so loved by Trieste and Friuli.
From mental distress to inclusion, the story of a social radio
The history of this broadcaster is closely linked to the place from which it broadcasts. The headquarters of the radio is in fact located inside the former psychiatric hospital of Trieste. Right in the middle of the San Giovanni cultural park. Its roots are therefore rooted in the discomfort experienced by people with mental problems. It is precisely here that Radio Fragola stands out from other broadcasters: giving a voice to these disadvantaged people, who find here an open space for discussion. In addition to programs of a social nature, the broad program schedule of the radio offers in-depth political programs, training, as well as lots of good music. But perhaps the most fascinating side of this broadcaster lies in the fact that everyone is given the opportunity to propose their own radio program, with a view to inclusion that sees diversity as its strength.
A Friulian (and Italian) excellence
With this prestigious award, Radio Fragola takes a further step towards national notoriety. The hope is that it will soon become a point of reference for other radios and for those who are committed to social issues.
