Il Most Beautiful Village in Italy today is the island of Orta San Giulio, in the province of Novara, Piedmont. Coming from Gozzano, the lakefront that announces Orta is full of nineteenth-century neoclassical-style houses with azalea flower gardens and camellias.

You enter the village among elegant sixteenth-eighteenth-century palaces with open galleries overlooking the gardens sloping down to the lake. Piazza Motta is a living room closed on three sides by arcades, in the shadow of which the shops thrive while the terraces of the cafes push themselves with the tables to lick the water.
“The place, bizarrely, is called Orta. One who knew how to look, my father said, called it a watercolor of God "(Werner, Terraferma)
