Holly is a Christmas symbol that is used as a gift or purchase for decorations because it is rich in meanings and traditions. It is an evergreen plant, with round, bright red fruits, dark green shiny leaves and sharp thorns. Very decorative, it is used to create garlands or centerpieces, decorate the tree Christmas and add a festive touch to environments. It should not be confused with the butcher's broom which, although similar, has smooth leaves with a single small spine at the end.

Wish you good luck

Holly is a welcome gift at Christmas because it brings protection and good luck. Its thorns symbolize strength and determination; its red fruits represent love and joy. According to tradition, this plant is a real talisman against negativity and has the power to keep evil spirits away, which is why it is usually hung on the entrance doors of houses.

Already in 100 BC. C., Pliny the Elder recommended planting holly near the entrance to the house. The ancient Celts thought it had magical properties and therefore considered it a symbol of connection between the earthly and spiritual worlds. Furthermore, being an evergreen plant, it is a symbol of eternal life and hope, especially in winter. It is also associated with fertility and prosperity.

A light in winter

The holly plant is particularly resistant, it does not need much care, but it is preferable to keep it in a semi-shaded area. It needs moist soil and needs to be watered often. To protect it from parasites and make it grow, it is advisable that it be fertilized in spring and winter, to help flowering. A characteristic of holly is that not all of its leaves sting.

In fact, in the same plant there are different types of leaves: as you climb towards its apex they become smooth. The presence of spines at its base act as a self-defense mechanism from possible animal attacks. Giving a holly, a messenger of joy and conviviality, makes the magic of Christmas even brighter. Traditionally, in the days preceding the winter solstice, lovers exchanged sprigs of holly which would bring a little light in the darkness and a little warmth in the frost, together with lots of luck and protection.
