Good practices against waste to be responsible citizens e aware and to concretely carry on a lifestyle oriented towards sustainability. Babaco Market, the 100 percent e-grocery service Made in Italy has identified three fundamental actions in collaboration with Alex Bellini, environmental popularizer, explorer and mental coach.

No to food waste

Every product we eat involves a certain consumption of water for its production. In fact, the use of the precious liquid is necessary to transform food into processed products. Furthermore, changing habits in the way things and clothes are bought is equally important, as their production and transport consumes water. Avoiding buying disposable items, or poor quality clothes, helps to further reduce water consumption.

The Mediterranean diet and the recent update of the food pyramid sees at its base the more frequent consumption of fruits, grains and vegetables, compared to a recommended consumption of meat and derivatives only twice a week. It is a good support to not only follow a healthy diet, but to adopt eating habits that also encourage sustainability. Indeed, a recent study has shown that a healthy diet that favors plant-based protein sources has an impact on the decrease in the use of water resources between 11 and 35 percent.

Wabi Sabi

Every time food is wasted, all the water used to produce it is also “thrown away”. By reducing food waste, you can help relieve pressure on natural resources, such as water. Resources that have been used for production, packaging and transportation. There FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) estimates that around a third of the food destined for the world's tables is lost or wasted. If we look at Italy in 2022, food waste reached around 4 million tons, almost 30 kg of food per capita. Waste that mostly concerns fruit, vegetables and bread.

However, given the current economic situation and the growing number of people living in conditions of extreme poverty, the waste of tons of imperfect but good fruit and vegetables cannot be ignored. One way to solve this problem, as Bellini himself suggests, is to learn from the Japanese philosophy of Wabi Satthe. A current of thought that attributes great value to incompleteness, imperfection and helps to accept the natural cycle of life. Wabi Sabi means to see the beauty in what is irregular or unusual. In daily life, fruit and vegetables characterized by some imperfections, but excellent for consumption, are the perfect expression of this.
