Giuseppe La Spina, a doctor in archaeology, has been promoting a series of initiatives for the promotion and enhancement of the historical, archaeological and artistic heritage of the Gela area for several years. Since 2013 he has been elected Director of the Geloi Archaeological Group, while in 2016 he was elected regional secretary of the Archaeological Groups of Italy, organizations with which he promotes a series of initiatives regarding the theme of cultural heritage in Sicily. Since 2014 he has produced a series of publications following excavation activities at the Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina, underwater excavation and recovery activities in the Bulala area, and study and research activities in the Gela area. In 2014 he was appointed Director of the Mediterranean International Centre of Studies, a study center that carries out research, study and excavation activities in the archaeological field and has agreements with several European universities and other relevant bodies. Since 2015 he has collaborated with several newspapers and magazines through the publication of articles on the theme of safeguarding and knowledge of the archaeological heritage. In 2016 he was the author of the discovery of the "Calendar Stone" of contrada Cozzo Olivo, a sundial dating back to the Bronze Age. The discovery was confirmed in March 2017 by the National Institute of Astrophysics.
