The emergency coronavirus is increasingly serious around the world and, pending the arrival of a cure that works, the governments of many countries (Italy included) have already taken drastic measures as new ones lockdown e curfew. Ecosystem's staff is Covid-19 vaccine it is not yet available, but some researchers are studying alternative treatments, using substances already present in our body. It is the case adenosine, a molecule with anti-inflammatory action which could cure patients in a short time. The idea of using theadenosine against Covid-19 is from the director of Medical Oncology al Great Metropolitan Hospital di Reggio Calabria, Pierpaolo Correale, who has been studying adenosine for more than 20 years but, my colleague Sebastian Macheda, director of intensive care and anesthesia, had the ingenious intuition to turn the idea into an effective cure.
Adenosine against Covid-19: the study of the GOM of Reggio Calabria
As explained by Dr. Correale, adenosine, if administered intravenously, could produce side effects to the body. In order to bypass this problem, he therefore decided to resort to aerosol technique, using a particular machine. The GOM filed the patent last May and, shortly thereafter, the US scientific journal Plos One published the study by Italian researchers. The 14 patients who were given adenosine against Covid-19 responded very well to treatment. In most cases (those admitted to the intensive care unit) the desired results arrived within a week. Another good news concerns the possible application of the treatment not only for the coronavirus, but also for other pathologies with strong lung inflammation.
The therapy that involves the use of adenosine against Covid-19 can be an excellent help to fight this pandemic that has blocked the world for months. A effective vaccine it does not exist yet, but results such as those obtained from the GOM research (which is entirely Italian) give hope that the pandemic will soon come to an end.
