The Bernina red train, the slowest express in Europe! The famous red train leaves from Tirano in Valtellina, to reach the high altitudes of the Bernina Hospice, at an altitude of 2253 meters. The little red train, so nicknamed for the flaming color of its carriages, is a jewel that belongs to the Rhaetian Railway, and since 2008 it has also been Unesco world heritage.

The Bernina red train

The express leaves from Tirano near the imposing Basilica dedicated to the Madonna, considered one of the most beautiful churches in Lombardy. After a few kilometres, it reaches one of the most evocative points of the route, the marvelous Brusio helicoidal viaduct. After passing Lake Poschiavo and the town itself with its characteristic old houses, you continue until you reach the panoramic point of Alp Grüm, at an altitude of 2.091 metres. After white lake, you arrive at the Bernina pass, from where it is possible to admire the imposing Morteratsch glacier and the mountain range of the Bernina lace, the highest peak of the Rhaetian Alps.

From Tirano to St.Moritz and along the Via Albula, up to the Spinas station, among nature and landscapes that look like illustrated postcards. Without forgetting the possibility of tasting the typical local products of the gastronomy ofEngadine and also to do some nice horse rides between one stop and another. And, then, have a good trip on the slowest express in Europe!
