Many Italians will have preferred foreign destinations, but many are instead those who have opted for ours fantastic territory. Among the most popular destinations of the year, it certainly ranks at the top sunny Sardinia, which in addition to having undisputed corners of luxuriant nature, also boasts an almost Martian vision: the Red Rocks of Arbatax.
Sardinia and its natural beauties
Anyone who has visited this wonderful island at least once in their life knows that it fully represents the most genuine part of Italy. There Sardinia bewitches every tourist and passionate traveler thanks to his very high peaks, its luxuriant woods, and its endless beaches. Due to its morphological characteristics, Sardinia is a real one micro-continent, with different ecosystems. Warm and welcoming with tourists, Sardinia is the ideal place to spend holidays in the name of sunbathing and restorative baths. However, there are also many other natural excellences that deserve a stop. The rocks of Sardinia, in fact, are considered among the oldest in Italy. The earliest geological formations date back to the Paleozoic, although there are others that appeared in later periods (in the Mesozoic, Tertiary and Quaternary). This multiple coexistence of rocks provides a truly impressive example of variety.
Moreover, the discovery of several caves was the accidental result of the precise and determined activity of courageous archaeologists. In fact, they would have entered these harsh cavities, in order to look for artifacts of previous civilizations. The same goes for the indefatigable geologists, who have conducted research expeditions of the aquifers, to improve the water supply. Between caves submerged, the first is certainly there Nereo's cave, one of the largest in the whole Mediterranean. The most important coastal caves are certainly those of Nettuno in Alghero and that of Bue Marino in Cala Gonone. Speaking of rocks, there are some considered unique, and that it is impossible not to notice in Sardinian territory: the Red Rocks of Arbatax!
The Red Rocks of Arbatax: the Sardinia you don't expect
It seems to be in front of the Australian Ayers Rock, right? And instead we are in Italy, precisely in the province of Nuoro, in the port of Arbatax, fraction of Tortolì. Immersed in the crystalline sea (and in the case of Sardinia, it can be said!), The Red Rocks rise imposingly, the result of time and the skilful game of nature. Le Red Rocks offer a breathtaking view, which perhaps we seem to have already seen somewhere else. In fact, this splendid location was the backdrop to the famous film by Lina Wertmüller Overwhelmed by an unusual fate. The fiery color of these rocks comes from porphyry (which characterizes them in a unique and special way) and from granite. It almost seems to be on Mars, even if the emerald sea immediately brings to mind the fantastic Italian coasts. As captivating as it is to explore, it is good to be careful.
The depth of the waters, in fact, does not reserve a pleasant experience for the unprepared. In any case, tourism blends well with the area, which represents an irresistible destination for more experienced divers. The port of Arbatax probably owes its name to the Arabic word from which it derives, which means fourteen. The reference is due to the presence of the fourteenth watchtower in the area, and located a short distance from the port itself. The Red Rocks of Arbatax, however, do not only constitute a monumental naturalistic frame. Indeed, they represent a tourist pole also for musicians, thanks to Red Rocks Blues Festival, held from July to August. The famous Festival hosts internationally renowned artists, and has welcomed several: David Bowie, Lou Reed and Eric Clapton. Well ... what more do you want?
