The Museum of Ancient Ships in Pisa

The museum therefore houses about thirty ships, dating from between the 1998rd century BC and the XNUMXth century AD, found in XNUMX in the San Rossore railway station. Furthermore, the museum is also an archaeological site that traces the origins of the city, from the Etruscans to the Romans, up to the Lombards. The guided tour of the next few days will be a journey into a world that has remained submerged for centuries and centuries. In December 1998 during the works for the construction of a building that was supposed to house the headquarters of the new command and control system, at the Pisa station San Rossore traces of archaeological material have emerged from the underground excavations. The discovery soon turned out to be much more important than expected, as it is a site of great historical importance. Initially it was believed to be a port call, but the true nature of the deposit was soon identified.

It is the crossing point of a canal of the Pisan centuriation with the course of the Serchio river (the ancient Auser) where, following a series of disastrous floods (at least nine have been identified, from the XNUMXnd century BC to the XNUMXth century AD), at least thirty boats sank. Specifically, these are transport ships and river boats, perfectly preserved, thanks to the particular situation of complete lack of oxygen and the presence of underground aquifersAnd. Thus, a large quantity of usually perishable materials has been preserved up to the present day, such as wood, ropes, baskets, fishing gear and utensils. Furthermore, a large part of the cargo of these ships contained in amphorae and vases was recovered. From in-depth studies it has been possible to trace the area of origin of the ships, which would have arrived from various parts of the Mediterranean.
