La Sicilia, thanks to its many natural and artistic beauties and resources, it has been chosen by many productions like movie set. Let's find out what they are.
Sicily "queen" of TV series with film sets throughout the island
La Sicilia is undoubtedly the "queen" of locations as regards the movies and TV series: there are so many productions, both national and international, active on the island since recent months, conquered by the beauty of nature, art and history.
At the moment a lot of dramas are being filmed in the most disparate places in Sicily; the actors and professionals involved are getting to know and appreciate the warmth of the Sicilians, the beauty of the often wild and unexplored places or the most popular ones for nightlife.
On the island, again in the next few months, they will be filming Gabriele Muccino e Hella Wenders, grappling with their respective cinematographic works. Also coming Joshua Oppenheimer who will direct the musical”The End” with the actress Tilda Swinton.
Active productions in Sicily
For some years now, thanks to a skilful advertising campaign promoted both by the Sicily Region, by individuals and by social networks, Sicily has been chosen to shoot numerous cinematographic and television products. Among the most relevant we mention: the second season of The White lotus, HBO miniseries (in Italy on Sky and Now), all filmed in Sicily (From Taormina to Cefalù, to Noto); the last chapter of the saga of Indiana Jones, filmed in 2021 to be released soon; in fact, the production chose the archaeological sites of Magna Graecia as the setting, including the area of Segesta and other places in the province of Trapani, but also Palermo, Cefalù e Syracuse, where the famous Ear of Dionysius has turned into a mine.
Movies Aquaman (shot in the province of Trapani between Erice, San Vito lo Capo, the Zingaro Nature Reserve and Castellammare del Golfo) to Cyrano (shot at Noto for the Baroque, a SIRACUSA and onEtna) of 2022. Among the Italian productions there is also: “The Strangeness” by R. D'Andò which achieved great success at the box office and a hoard of prizes and awards was filmed in Palermo, Trapani and Catania. It's called "Sicilian Holidays” the film by Michela Scolari, produced by Antonio Chiaramonte, which is currently being filmed in Sciacca, in the province of Agrigento.
Colapesce and Dimartino, in the last summer of 2022, they shot their road movie in less known and unexplored places in Sicily, also obtaining a Silver Ribbon.
Off to in Gulf of Macari in Trapani the filming of the third series Makari.
The new productions
In this 2023, the Netflix TV series on The Florio family and inspired by the famous novel Il The Leopard have chosen to stage their sets mainly in the Historic center of Palermo and then moved to the province. The latter production also chose Syracuse as its location. The iconic streets of the historic center have been transformed
Ficarra and Picone in recent weeks they are shooting their new film in Catania, also chosen by Valeria Golino for his film dedicated to the writer Goliarda Wisdom and the TV series Vanina Guarrasi"With Giusy Buscemi. The filming has involved the entire historic center in recent months.
On Etna the filming of the medieval fantasy is being completed "The last redemptionby director John Real. Filming took place in different parts of Sicily, including the Castello Maniace in Ortigia, the Alcantara Gorges in Castiglione, but mostly in the Catania area. Various workers from all over the world were involved.
