In Forlimpopoli, in the province of Forlì-Cesena, an ancient rite linked to the arrival of spring takes place annually. Called "Segavecchia" or "Segavecia", the folkloristic agricultural ritual consists of cutting a papier-mâché puppet depicting an old woman, filled inside with sweets and toys which are distributed to children.
The festival, which celebrates the end of winter and the arrival of the beautiful season, is underway and will end tomorrow, Monday 10 March. The figure of the old woman symbolizes the earth preparing to flourish again, producing new fruits. The latter, in turn, are symbolized by the gifts and toys that emerge from her belly after she is cut.
Bond between man and the earth
“Segavecchia” has deep roots in the rural culture of the area, which testifies to the indissoluble bond between man and the land. The protagonist is the straw and papier-mâché puppet, which is made by the inhabitants of the town. The "old woman" is then carried in procession through the streets of Forlimpopoli, accompanied by groups of musicians and masked dancers.
The puppet is dressed in old and worn clothes, representing the past year. The ritual always attracts numerous visitors and curious people. During the procession, the "Segavecchia" is burned in a large bonfire, a gesture that represents the natural cycle of life and death, the constant renewal of nature and the perpetual passage of time, as well as the hope for a good agricultural year.
The music, dances and colorful masks contribute to creating a festive and convivial atmosphere, which brings together young and old in a collective celebration. Even if the ritual has undergone transformations and reinterpretations over the centuries, it continues to represent an important part of the tradition and identity of the Forlimpopoli community. The origin of this festival, according to tradition, dates back to the Middle Ages, when an old woman of dubious morals, guilty of having eaten meat, in contravention of the Lenten fast, was condemned to be sawed alive. However, some documents attest to its existence as early as the 14th century.
A success that is drawing to a close
The 2024 edition of "Segavecchia" is selling out, with hundreds of people arriving from all over Romagna. The eagerly awaited show with allegorical floats and musical groups is joined by rides and itinerant attractions, food stands, the "old woman's market" and the great desire to have fun. The “Segavecchia” can well be considered the identity festival of Forlimpopoli. A party that confirms itself as a true success, thanks also to the precious contribution of local associations. The final weekend begins today and will close the 2024 edition in style.
