Young Italians Abroad. The testimony of four Italian boys

“Leaving is hard. We traded an opportunity with great sacrifices "

Young Italians Abroad? "It is better that they stay where they are, because they are certainly no better than those who remained"
In recent days, Giuliano Poletti, Minister of Labor, made this statement which has sparked a fierce controversy especially on Social Networks. The minister then apologized but the fact remains that a minister cannot pronounce certain words.

Italiani.it interviews 4 young Italian emigrants who have very clear ideas

“Many people leave confident that they will find well-paid jobs abroad without any kind of qualification and experience” declared Paolo, Chiara, Eros and Elisa, who are well aware of this difficult adventure.

How do you think those who have chosen to leave and put Italy behind them?

Paul, 36 years old. He spent six months in China. He has just returned to Milan and is about to leave. Destination: Dubai. “I work in design as a project manager for large Italian fashion companies. Mine should be one of the few flourishing sectors in Italy, but it's not like that ". He tells us.
Indeed, “there has never been a true culture that is not part of the fashion system. And the crisis is making everything worse: companies closing down, late payments, ridiculous budgets. Leaving means opportunities but above all sacrifices. Leave loved ones, friends, recalibrate your life ”- concludes Paolo.

Same thought and same line for those who moved to Dubai since 2009. It is Chiara, 35, works in an advertising agency. "Some people believe that changing country automatically means finding luck, when there must always be good preparation at the base" - says Chiara.
Chiara has a child and has been married since 2014 with Luca. Together they bought a beach house. “I was feeling bad in Italy, I wanted to change”, recalls Chiara. “I received a call from Dubai and at the third interview they offered me four times what I was getting in Rome. My husband left Italy to improve languages after graduating in Engineering. He was supposed to be gone for three months. There are ten of them in Ireland, England and Dubai. Today he works on the design of the subway. He has accumulated an experience that in our country he would have achieved with the work of two lives ”- concludes Chiara.

From Dubai to Paris

Elisa, 30, pediatric anesthetist. He has been in Paris for a year. “Young people must have the opportunity to go abroad, but also the possibility of returning to find opportunities in their own country. And I agree- Elisa declares. Hers wasn't a real escape. “In Italy I had received a job offer. But I chose to leave because an experience abroad has always fascinated me ".
In France, there are better opportunities in the Elisa sector. “I am more empowered. As a result, professional growth is faster. Here there are no volunteer doctors who work for free waiting for a competition or rankings established at the table ”concludes Elisa.

A similar speech comes from Eros, 35, university professor at the London School of Hygien and Tropical Medicine in London. “Italy is not a country for young people. At our age, if you want to grow professionally and beyond, it is better to leave. My work is based almost exclusively on research and development. In Italy in this field it is difficult to make a career: few spaces, investments and responsibilities ". Eros declares. "Return? Why not. It depends on what. If an interesting project were to start in my field, I would think about it ”- concludes Eros.
In conclusion, many people leave without the right preparation. But generalizing is wrong. There are those who go abroad because they receive the right phone call. Who does it for love. And who because fascinated by other cultures.
