The 2018/2019 school year has ended. The exams are over. The time for holidays and carefree days at sea has finally arrived. Another year has ended. A year of study, sacrifices and new knowledge. A busy year of laughter and friendships born in school. A big news, however, awaits the students in September. An idea, a project and finally a decision. In beautiful Sicily, the Sicilian dialect, in fact, officially becomes a subject of study.
The Sicilian dialect: taught in all grades of schools, in a different way
A real and operational proposal. The regional council chaired by the governor Nello Musumeci, on the occasion of 72nd anniversary of the Sicilian autonomy, has decided to introduce the study of Sicilian history and its dialect. An important decision, made on a salient date for the Sicilia. "The Statute of our Region, issued by King Umberto II on May 72, 15, turns 1946 years after years of struggle and blood, crowning ancient and never dormant aspirations. That revolutionary event also marked the start of a season full of good intentions and widespread hopes for the economic and social development of Sicily. "
So commented the governor Musumeci. The Sicilian dialect is a distinctive feature of a region, the pride and culture of a people. Every word, every sentence, tells of traditions. Traditions that you want to recover also thanks to the provision according to which the May 15 (Autonomy Day) it will no longer be a vacation day, but an opportunity to learn more about the contents of the regional statute. Councilor Lagalla added that “The Sicilian language will be placed within the teaching of a literary subject. It will be assessed whether the hour should be added to the usual weekly timetable or to replace others".

Another important point of the decision taken by the junta concerns the ways in which the study of the subject will be addressed. The Sicilian dialect, in fact, it predicts different levels of course. One that is aimed at primary and lower secondary schools; another, on the other hand, aimed at further study for high schools.
Many projects and many objectives. A project to be made effective, in such a way as to be able to realize it with the help, also, of teachers and students of all schools. The challenge has been launched and it is very important. Sicilian is a language recognized by UNESCO, it is spoken by at least five million people. A living, pulsating language, subject to various changes and numerous dominations. A linguistic range that includes Arabic, Greek, Latin, French and even Spanish expressions. We just have to wish everyone a good holiday and wait for the start of the new and exciting school adventure. Preserving, passing on and studying the Sicilian dialect offers us the opportunity to bring to life the language of the great writers who made and are making Sicily. From Sciascia to Bufalino.
