Easter Sunday Urbi et Orbi Blessing. It is imparted by the Holy Father, successor of Peter on the papal throne who, after having presided over the Eucharistic celebration, from the loggia of the Vatican basilica sends his message of good wishes to the city (Rome) and to the whole world. In fact urbi et orbi means ancient Rome (urbe); while the word orbi stands for world. for the ancient Romans the city of Rome, Orbi means “all'Orbe” that is 'world'.

Urbi and orbi

It is an expression used in the Catholic sphere on inscriptions, bulls and other pontifical documents and those of the Roman Congregations. On messages and blessings from the Pope directed to the faithful of Rome and those of the entire planet. By extension it is used to indicate everything concerning the pontificate and the Catholic Church; it is also reported in medals, coins and memoirs of the pontificate. The locution Urbis and Orbis, as well as in documents of the Holy See, it is also used to indicate the Latin language (Urbis et Orbis language), understood as a universal language, of Rome and of the world.

Urbi et orbi
The blessing of the Pope from the Vatican loggia

Today, Easter Sunday, the Eucharistic celebration that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus takes place in the courtyard of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The liturgy is presided over by Pope Francis who, at the end of the mass, will go around the square in the pope-mobile to greet the faithful. At midday, from the loggia of the basilica, he will bless the faithful present in the square and ideally those from all over the world who will be able to watch the celebration in live streaming on the Vatican News Facebook page and on the Vatican Media YouTube channel. A great celebration for the world of Christianity which rejoices in the new rebirth of Christ, who died crucified and rose again for the redemption of humanity.
