Italy hosted the second United Nations summit on sustainable food systems in Rome. The summit came exactly two years after the summit held in New York in 2021, the pre-summit of which was organized in Rome. Heads of State and Government and ministers from the 193 member countries of the United Nations took part in the meeting, which was once again organized at the headquarters of the FAO. To represent Italy Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Minister Antonio Tajani.

The event represented a key moment for all countries to report on the progress made at the national level since the 2021 summit. And on their contributions to achieving the 2030 Agenda, in a profoundly changed global context compared to two years ago. The three days of work highlighted the key role played by sustainable, equitable, healthy and resilient food systems as fundamental accelerators of the sustainable development goals and in favor of well-being of people and the planet without leaving anyone behind.

The event also highlighted the importance of promoting urgent action to be implemented on a large scale. This is to allow all actors in the food systems to share concrete cases of transformation, led by state and non-state actors. The decision to host the Summit again in Italy confirms the central and leading position that our country is increasingly assuming in the action of the international community. The goal is to face the great challenge of food security. A key role made possible also thanks to the very rich agri-food chain and the great Italian capabilities in terms of research and innovative technologies applied to agricultural development, with a particular link to climate change.
