The painters on display in Lipari

While for the twentieth century and contemporaries the names are: Vito Bongiorno, Ettore De Conciliis, Piero Guccione, Francesco Santosuosso and Luciano Ventrone. Waves, foam, breeze, sumptuous or placid, water, here it is represented in its forms, like stormy oceans, the course of the Tiber, the promontory of Portofino. Then the sea, this constant presence, which contains the very birth of life.
The Lipari exhibition, "Paintings on the water" is curated by Brigida Mascitti, which explains some poetic details:

“The range of stylistic, conceptual and thematic approaches to the image of water is absolutely varied, regardless of the chronology of the works.
And this is how the Tiber, with its enormous bends, is the protagonist of the painting “Poussin's Walk towards Monte Mario” from 1859 by Karl Lindermann Frommel. As of the “Valle del Tevere 1” of 2000 by Ettore De Conciliis.
The same happens when three artists such as Mosè Bianchi (with the "Family of the fisherman" of 1890), Carla Celesia of Vegliasco (with "Acqua e Sole" of 1912) and Carlo Passigli (with "Bimbi al mare" of 1920-30) they use the sea as a backdrop for immortal scenes of ordinary and daily life.

Water as a characterizing element of the exhibition

Water is often also the characterizing element of the city: so in “The port of New York” of 1912 by Attilio Pusterla, in the canvas “Brazil. In the vicinity of Olinda ”of 1924 by Giulio Aristide Sartorio and in the“ Canale di Venezia ”of 1939 by Bruno Croatto. Unmissable are the views of maritime cities and islands as in the case of "Genova Quarto" by Giorgio Belloni (1910-15), or in the "Beach on the island of Elba" by Plinio Nomellini of 1920.

The contemporaries on display for Paintings on the water

The contemporaries De Conciliis and Piero Guccione dwell on the placid shades of blue of the sea with "Perenni transiti III" of 2015 and the study from "Il nero e l'azzurro" of 2003 and there are those instead like Luciano Ventrone ("Mare restless "of 2020) and Francesco Santesuosso (" Storm on the primordial ocean "of 2015) immortalizes the restlessness and the unstoppable force of the sea or the stormy ocean with enormous material canvases.

The homage to Sicily is unmissable, an island bathed at the same time by three distinct seas and immortalized by Vito Bongiorno. With the work homage to one's homeland "My land" of 2021 or with a spectacular view at dusk of the Port of Palermo, a 2010 work by Ettore De Conciliis ".
The Lipari exhibition "Paintings on the water", therefore, will make, if possible, an island with dazzling beaches of pumice stone, even more interesting. The exhibition is an initiative supported by the Archaeological Park of the Aeolian Islands, directed by Rosario Vilardo, and created in collaboration with the Sicilian Region, Department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity.

The Lipari exhibition "Paintings on the water" was born from a synergistic idea of the director, the architect Vilardo, and Lorenzo Zichichi. It constitutes a new chapter on "water painting" investigated by Il Cigno Edizioni, which, with this one from Lipari, has dedicated five exhibitions to the subject.

“Odorless, tasteless, colorless, formless yet primitive origin of life on Earth. For a painter, painting water can be the challenge of a creative season or the obsession of a lifetime, as it was for some of the artists on display in Lipari.
And what space, better than an island, surrounded by water by its very nature, lends itself to hosting an exhibition like this that enlivens and regenerates the exhibition path of one of the most surprising museums in our region?
We are sure that the travelers expected in the Aeolian Islands in the coming months will love this very refined, liquid suggestion that the "Paintings on the water" give to this museum and its very rich collection of finds ", declares Alberto Samonà, the regional councilor for Cultural Heritage who will participate in the inauguration on 26 June at 19 pm.
