Giulio Regeni: twelve months in search of a truth

A year ago, on February 3, 2016, the body of Giulio Regeni, PhD student at Cambridge University who disappeared in Cairo a few days earlier.

The studies abroad, the knowledge of languages, the strong bond with the family and the writings on trade union struggles. That's who Giulio Regeni was. A young Italian who has decided to leave Italy and has lost his life.

Who wanted this twenty-eight year old Italian who was in Egypt to do a research on the independent trade unions of the African country dead?

One of the most accredited hypotheses is that the Regeni objective was almost "accidental", as the journalist Antonella Beccaria believes, author together with Gigi Marcucci of the linro-investigation entitled Die in Cairo di Castelvecchi.

According to some sources, the figure of Giulio may have been indicated by a Western intelligence apparatus with the aim of damaging the commercial relations between Italy and Egypt which were very solid until the Regeni murder. Suffice it to say that our country has enormous economic interests in that area, such as the oil field discovered by Eni off the Egyptian coast.

The truth about Giulio Regeni's death

Certainly one thing is clear. Giulio Regeni has been subjected to torture which tells a precise story.

The young Italian was in the hands of the Egyptian secret services. The young man's story is similar to the others. On January 25, 2016, when Giulio disappears, the lifeless body of a man is found, an engineer considered a political dissident by the al-Sisi regime. It had the same signs of torture later found on Giulio's body.

The role of the University of Cambridge

That of the University of Cambridge is one of the questions that remained unclear. The English university has not expressed a specific desire to collaborate with the Italian judiciary. There was a lack of answers from Giulio's academic representatives.
