The delivery of the David di Donatello, the most coveted film award in Italy, will be staged on 27 March. And also this year Alessandro Cattelan will present the event, with a live broadcast organized by Sky Italy.
Many films in competition, but to stand out above all there are two titles with 17 nominations each. Let's find out together.

The two giants

Reading the long list of candidates, it is impossible not to notice two films present in almost all 25 categories. We are talking about indivisible by Edoardo De Angelis e The mad gioia directed by Paolo Virzì. The two feature films compete in 17 categories including Best film e Best Direction. In both awards the other candidates are Make beautiful dreams by Marco Bellocchio, Flower by Claudio Giovannesi e As fast as the wind directed by Matteo Rovere. The latter film fits immediately behind those of De Angelis and Virzì with 16 nominations including Best digital effects e Best Photography.
A lot of curiosity also for the film My, we talked about a few months ago. The young Fabio Guaglione and Fabio Resinaro compete as Best new director e Best digital effects. The international release in the film is scheduled for April 7, after the great success it had at home last January.

Actors and actresses: the candidates for the David

In the Best Leading Actress the clash between De Angelis and Virzì is confirmed. The twins Marianna and Angela Fontana (indivisible) will compete for the prize with Valeria Tedeschi and Micaela Ramazzotti (The pazza Joy). The other candidates are Dafne Scoccia with her interpretation in Flower and Matilda De Angelis (As fast as the wind).

The Fontana twins nominated for the David di Donatello

Stefano Accorsi seems to be the favorite as Best Actor in a Leading Role. Its interpretation in As fast as the wind confirmed the qualities of the Bolognese actor.
The competition is however fierce and sees Valerio Mastandrea, protagonist in Make beautiful dreams, at the forefront. Following Michele Riondino (The girl of the world), Sergio Rubini (The stuff of dreams) and Toni Servillo (Confessions).
Mastandrea also competes for another David: the one like Best Supporting Actor. And it does so with its interpretation in Flower, film that can boast 6 total nominations.

Double nomination for David for Mastandrea

Why Donatello's David?

The competition was established in 1956 with the aim of promoting and stimulating art and culture in Italy. This at a time when the memory of the war and its horrors was still strong and alive. And also for this reason the first symbol used for the manifestation was a door that opened, to indicate the entry of humanity into a new epoch. Instead, a gold statuette made by Bulgari which depicted, in fact, Donatello's David.
Over Roma, a venue that has continuously hosted the David since 1982, it must be mentioned Taormina. In fact, for almost 30 years the best world actors and directors have paraded in the Greek-Roman theater of the Sicilian city. And for the most nostalgic there is nothing more beautiful than a statue of David with the beautiful Taormina behind it.
