Jean Frèdèeric Bazille and Impressionism at the Batignolles

Jean Frederic Bazille was born on 6 December dated 1841 in Montpellier, France. Son of a Protestant family of wealthy economic conditions. Moving to Paris to study medicine, he soon decided to drop out of university devoting himself completely to painting.

He opened his studio at Batignolles. In a short time it became a point of attraction and meeting for many French artists. Including Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Camille Pissarro, Paul Cèzanne, Paul Verlaine and Berthe Morisot. Not surprisingly, the partnership that will be born between them and will then evolve into the Impressionist movement, will take the name of "Batignolles School ".

Among his famous paintings: "La robe Rose" currently kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, "Autoportrait" today at The Art Institute of Chicago. “Réunion de famille” kept at the Musèe D'Orsay. “Porte de la Reine à Aigues-Mortes” today at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York and “Le pécheur à l'épervier” today in Zurich.

Baldassar Castiglione: well-known Italian diplomat and writer

Baldassar Castiglione he was born in Casatico, in the Mantua area, on December 6, 1478. From a noble family related to the Gonzagas. The father is the noble Cavaliere Cristoforo da Castiglione, while the mother is Luigia Gonzaga, marquises of Mantua. As with many intellectuals of the petty and medium nobility of his time, his life is full of experiences. Carried out in numerous trips and diplomatic missions at the service of some of the major families of central and northern Italy.

After his training in Milan, Baldassarre Castiglione is alternately in the service of the Gonzagas, lords of Mantua, of the Montefeltro, lords of Urbino and Della Rovere. Participating with different diplomatic positions in the complicated events involving the Papal State and the states of northern Italy, at the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

His major work: "The Cortegiano“, A dialogue in four books, begun in 1513-1514. Widespread and known even before it was published. The first edition dates back to 1528, by Aldo Manuzio and Andrea Asolo, printers in Venice. The work found immediate success and spread throughout Europe. “Il Cortegiano” is not a simple manual of behavior for use by the courts, but rather a stylization of the ideal courtly society to which the Renaissance aristocracy tends.

Alfred Eisenstaedt: the pioneer of photography with natural light

Alfred Eisenstaedt, was born on 6 December 1898 in Dirschau in West Prussia (then Imperial Germany, now Poland). He is the photographer who took the famous photo "The kiss in Times Square ".

His photograph, which portrays a sailor passionately kissing a nurse in the middle of the street and the crowd, is also known by its original title "VJ Day in Times Square".

The abbreviation VJ means "Victory over Japan“, With historical reference to the Second World War.

Eisenstaedt was the pioneer of the photography with natural light. He gave up the flash to take advantage of the natural environment. Another strong point was the simplicity of his compositions. He almost always worked with minimal equipment. He was a master of “candid” photography, with random images that give an emotional charge to the viewer.

Alfred Eisenstaedt continued taking pictures until his death at the age of 97 on August 24, 1995 in the town of Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts.
