Architectural creation, we said, is found in Bologna and not in Rome, as many might think, allowing themselves to be fooled by the name, which is very reminiscent of the capital. The staircase, or rather "La monumentale della Montagnola", has quite ancient origins and therefore deserves to be visited and studied.

Origins and architecture

To access it it is necessary to cross the side of the Pincio, built in 1896 thanks to a project conceived by Tito Azzolini and Attilio Muggia. At the base of the architectural work lies a monumental fountain, which was sculpted by Diego Sarti and Pietro Veronesi. Inside the park there is a circular tank.

The stairways, on the other hand, were adorned with large lead lamps with oil lanterns, to illuminate the streets in the night at that time. The façade also has great communicative and artistic importance. On the main facade, in fact, there are bas-reliefs of great charm, two to be exact: the “Bologna docet” by Arturo Colombarini and “Bologna Libertas” by Ettore Sabbioni. The central fountain, made by Diego Sarti and Pietro Veronesi, based on a design by Muggia and Azzolini, represents the splendor and the fulcrum of the monument. Taking a step back again, it is good to remember that the work was erected in a historical period of strong change and the desire to grow and to show its power to the eyes of the world.
