Emigration in Italy it is certainly not new. Already at the beginning of the twentieth century, thousands of Italians left the country every year in search of fortune. This phenomenon, in alternating phases, has always been a typical characteristic of the Italic people. Motivations and needs change, but in the end there is always some relative, friend or acquaintance of ours who decides to leave the country. And in recent years one of the most popular destinations for Italian migrants is Germany. Especially Berlin turns out to be the favorite destination for us Italians.

Capital of Europe

But why is Berlin so popular? The German capital, after the unification of Germany, was the subject of strong national investments. These investments stimulated the local economy favoring a profound urban restyling still on stage today. The opening of numerous construction sites, the job opportunities and the birth of new neighborhoods attracted thousands of Germans and foreigners. Within about ten years, Berlin underwent a radical transformation. War, wall and issues between the West and the Soviet Union became just (bad) memories. The heart of Germany had begun to beat again and its beating did nothing but attract people from all over Europe. Berlin thus became an open and multi-ethnic city, very different from other large German centers. A cross between the many European cultures, starting above all with the Turkish, Polish and Mediterranean ones.
And on its streets the first thing you notice is precisely this multi-ethnic being. Nobody ever feels like they're a Berliner. Everyone seems to come from another place and Berlin is nothing more than a place from which to start again and build a future. Entrepreneurs, wealthy businessmen, but also artists, recent graduates or simple travelers in search of fortune. These are just some of the many figures that it is possible to meet in the capital. Culture, art, tolerance, possibilities, investments and work are terms that can easily be compared to the city of Berlin, even if the difficulties caused by the economic crisis are not lacking.

Italians in Berlin

Last year's statistics clearly show a clear growth in the number of Italians residing in Berlin. From 2010 to today, the Italian community has expanded more and more, with an estimated annual growth of around 15%. Currently, about 25 thousand Italians live in the German capital, which makes us the largest people in Western Europe. Before us only Turkey, Poland and the Balkans. Important numbers that take on even greater significance by analyzing them. The Italians who move to Berlin are mainly new graduates under 30, small entrepreneurs and artists. Their integration into German society is not without obstacles, but they usually manage to find stable employment in less than a year. Employment that most of the time reflects the demands of the worker through the possibility of making a career and a salary that is difficult to match in Italy.
