The data of the Migrantes Foundation regarding expatriation and transfers abroad for the last year analyzed have been released in these days.
In the period between January and December 2015, over 100 thousand Italians have left the country. The number demonstrates a 3,7% increase in migration over the previous year. But what worries analysts is the data on the relationship between those who leave and those who return. After ten years of stability, the number of departures has exceeded that of returns.
Italian migration: everywhere in the world
That the Italian was a people with a strong predisposition to migration is well known. Already at the beginning of the twentieth century, countries such as America, Australia and the other great powers had a large Italian community. But if before it was done out of necessity, given the very poor conditions of some areas of the country, the new generations do it more to fulfill themselves.
In fact, the migration of this century sees the Millennials (those born between 1980 and 2000) expatriate out of pure ambition or curiosity. The favorite destination is Germany, thanks to the many job opportunities. Right behind we find England, but forecasts speak of a sharp decline in the coming years due to Brexit. Also protagonists are Spain, France and Belgium, Argentina and Brazil. In South America, the Italian community has increased dramatically over the last ten years. Over 700 Italians are registered in Argentina and nearly 400 in Brazil.
Not just young people
However, migration is not just about millennials. In the last year the age group between 34 and 50 years has increased. But there are also more and more people over 60 who decide to go abroad, much to the surprise of analysts.
Certainly not a rosy picture for Italy which sees migration as one of the worst dangers for the future. The escape of its possible resources, current and future, risks undermining the economic recovery. And the figures on foreigners leaving the country also alarm the experts. More and more "acquired" Italians in recent years are expatriating a second time, confirming the many economic difficulties present today.
