The villages of Umbria, already in 1874, enchanted the American writer Henry James. His trip to Umbria was "love at first sight". Expressing all his love for the delightful villages he had explored, he wrote an essay using these words:
"His first cure will be not to be in a hurry, to walk everywhere very slowly and aimlessly and observe everything that his eyes will encounter .."
In these places the relationship between man and nature becomes immediately intimate. The sensation you get when entering this region is that of absolute peace and physical and mental well-being.
All the senses are awakened and the intensity of the colors is captured. The green of nature so enveloping and therapeutic. The blue of the clear sky that is found in the paintings and frescoes of the great artists of the region. The red and ocher of the autumn season. The silver gray of the olive trees and that of the fog that, in the morning, often envelops the villages of Umbria, especially in this season. The yellow of the oil and the ruby of the wine.
Bevagna, Montefalco and Trevi: three small jewels that offer interesting ideas for visits and delicious tastings
Among the most interesting Umbrian villages to visit we recommend:
Bevagna it is an enchanting village which still preserves intact the testimonies of its Roman and medieval origins. Piazza Silvestri stands out and strikes, defined as the most beautiful of the minor pizzas in Italy, particularly in its asymmetry. Near the homonymous Romanesque basilica, S. Michele Arcangelo, the Palazzo dei Consoli and the Church of S. Domenico. This is the beating heart of Bevagna, the place of strong powers where yesterday as today everything happens.
Montefalco, cradle of Sagrantino, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy called the "railing of Umbria", due to its historic center enclosed by medieval walls. “One of the most peaceful places on earth,” he wrote Hermann Hesse in 1907, calling it a quiet center of Franciscan art. He thus went to the Museum of S. Francesco, to admire the frescoes by Gozzoli, author of "The Stories of the life of S. Francesco" and the Nativity by Perugino.
On the offshoots of Mount Serano there is Trevi, one of the oldest villages in Umbria, with a medieval layout, the capital of oil par excellence.
