Instagram also brings the new system to Italy to verify the age of majority of its subscribers. The company provides two basic steps to allow subscribers who were previously minors to unlock all the features of the app, once they reach the age of majority.

Instagram

The first novelty concerns the loading of an identification document, which proves the 18 years of age. Secondly, the social network will scan the user's face to analyze his details and validate his age. This latest technology, much discussed, is made possible by the collaboration between Instagram and Yoti, a company specializing in biometric security. As Meta, the parent company of Instagram explains, the data recorded at the time of the scan will only be used for temporary analysis through the algorithms of artificial intelligence that can estimate the age of a person.

The algorithm in question is not a facial recognition system and does not store on the systems of Yoti, Meta, or elsewhere, any data that allows the identity of the video to be traced. To subscribe to Instagram you must be at least 13 years old and from 2019, Meta asks new subscribers to indicate their age. “This allows us to offer experiences suitable for different groups, especially teenagers” explained by the American giant. “To the users we know we are teens We deliver age-appropriate experiences by offering private accounts by default, preventing unsolicited contact with adults they don't know, and limiting the options advertisers have to reach them."
