Great concern for the health of Pope Francis who has been hospitalized at the Gemelli hospital in Rome since yesterday. After the general audience, the Holy Father felt ill which forced him to go immediately to the large Capitoline hospital. According to what is learned from official sources, the pontiff would have had respiratory distress.
Pope Francis admitted to Gemelli
“Pope Francis – the spokesman of the Vatican Matteo Bruni – complained of some breathing difficulties and, therefore, went to the Gemelli Polyclinic to carry out some medical checks. The outcome of the same showed a respiratory infection (excluding the Covid 19 infection) which will require a few days of appropriate hospital medical therapy". During the audience before his illness, the pope appeared very serene; he made his usual tour with the 'popemobile' and regularly gave his catechesis. At the conclusion of the public meeting he appeared tired when he was lifted out of the wheelchair to get into the popemobile which took him to Santa Marta, where he later felt ill.

Pope Bergoglio he will remain under therapy at Gemelli for the necessary time but Holy Week and the Easter rites are now imminent and the Vatican is already thinking of an alternative plan for the celebrations. The respiratory infection that doctors are talking about shouldn't cause excessive concern, but we must not forget that Pope Francis is 86 years old and has already undergone, many years ago, the resection of part of his lung.

In wishing the Holy Father a speedy recovery, the Presidency entrusts to the Lord the doctors and health personnel who, with professionalism and dedication, take care of him and all the patients". This is the message of good wishes from the Italian Bishops' Conference released to the media following the hospitalization of the pontiff.
