There is a link between vitamin D and the Coronavirus: the important discovery comes from the “San Matteo” Polyclinic in Pavia.

Vitamin D and the link with the Coronavirus: the objectives of the study

A group of clinicians and researchers from Policlino San Matteo in Pavia conducted a study with the aim of identifying the link between Vitamin D deficiency and Covid-19 infection. The study, conducted in the period between March and April, examined 129 hospitalized patients, 34 of whom died during their hospital stay. In previous months, there had already been talk of his role carried out in the fight against the virus, which unfortunately, to this day, continues to claim victims.

The results of the study

The deficiency of this molecule correlates with clinical findings and disease severity markers. Among the seriously ill hospitalized patients, the study found a low level of vitamin D; however, these results cannot be associated with outcome variables, probably also in consideration of the critical condition of many patients upon admission to the hospital. The study, published in the prestigious “Clinical Nutrition” journal, bears the signature of Riccardo Caccialanza, director of the San Matteo Clinical Nutrition Unit, and his collaborators.
