Italy is full of historical treasures to be discovered and one of the richest regions, from this point of view, is undoubtedly the Sicilia. A clear example is given by the Selinunte park, located in the province of Trapani. A suggestive place to say the least, at the top of the European ranking by size. It is in fact the largest archaeological area on the continent. Inside it is possible to admire sanctuaries, necropolis, the seven temples and the Caves of Cusa. A real paradise of antiquity, able to tell the story beyond 2500 years of history. To these elements is added another of great importance. Selinunte is the greenest park in Italy.
Selinunte, the sustainable turning point
Here are the tricks and initiatives that have allowed the archaeological park of Selinunte to make an important leap forward in this ranking. It goes without saying that the park can be explored on foot in all its beauty. Its enormous size, however, prompted the management to organize an additional mobility service. The idea is to facilitate the part of the visit dedicated to the monumental area.
All this happens in a sustainable way, using only electric vehicles. An additional component that proved to be particularly important and appreciated especially during the night visits. These have been the focus of tourists over the past summer, recording a high rate of bookings. The moon high in the sky, a huge archaeological park ready to push visitors back in time and non-polluting vehicles able to make the visit comfortable. What else could you want?
A leap into history
Setting foot in the Selinunte park is a bit like actually setting foot in the world at the time of the ancient Greeks of the Megara Hyblaea. It was they who founded this area, choosing as a name Selinous, inspired by selinon, or wild parsley that still grows free today.
Although visiting this place is always suggestive, at any time of day, being able to do it at sunset certainly has its advantages. Seeing the sun go down and giving magnificent colors behind the ancient columns is priceless. A new route was also organized, leading to the eastern hill, where there are the remains of the temples F, E, G and the baglio Florio.
The idea is to always offer something new and intriguing to the public, also involving fans of archaeotrekking. At night, for example, the itinerary that leads to the sanctuary of Malophoros and the M Temple is particularly recommended. A way to combine the discovery of these ancient finds with hiking. Another important novelty is represented by the enormous landscape and tree restoration work completed in the last year. This concerns the western part, namely that of the great sanctuaries of Demeter Malophoros and of the M.
Useful Information
The Selinunte park will be open from 19.30 pm until midnight. As for the visit by electric shuttle, the cost is 18 euros. As for the evening visit, however, the reduced cost is 3 euros. A path that concerns only the eastern hill and the visit to the Baglio Florio. It should be noted, however, that entry is allowed only to Green Pass holders.
