Ancient and suggestive land, the Mongolia it is one of the most fascinating places in the world. Between mountains, deserts and a thousand-year history, the land of Genghis Khan is a popular destination for many travelers. Travelers like Gabriel Saluci or, as we are about to tell you, Robert Landolina. His hunger for adventure prompted him to get on a bike and tour the whole country. The ingredients? A backpack, pedals and that desire to live a unique experience.
From Novara to Mongolia
Roberto Landolina is a 28-year-old boy from the province of Vercelli with a degree in Economics and Commerce. This summer he decided to plan a trip that is certainly not common: crossing Mongolia alone on a bicycle. More than 750 kilometers, of which 500 are on rough terrain. Because in that distant land, asphalt is a luxury that few can afford.
The trip
Departure on August 30th from Novara for the capital Ulan Bator. But before that plane there were whole months of preparation, anxiety, stress and continuous research on the ideal path to follow. It was also necessary to understand the right equipment to carry around, because the danger of dragging too heavy luggage was real. Important decisions, but after careful planning Roberto was able to start this adventure.
The first part of the journey was not particularly hard. This is thanks to the numerous nearby urban centers and paved roads. Here it was not difficult to find accommodation, provisions and assistance in case of need. The difficulties arose when Roberto's bicycle had to deal with dirt and isolated stretches. Mud, sand and rocks were just some of the many test benches to which the young Vercelli was subjected.
But the real enemy was undoubtedly the temperature range. During the day it could exceed 35 degrees, while at night it was close to -10. Temperatures certainly not ideal if you find yourself armed only with a few blankets and a tent. Fortunately for Roberto, Mongolia turned out to be cold only in the climate. In fact, the local populations have never denied a hot dish and shelter to the traveler, making everything simpler and more fascinating.
An adventure lasting about a month that allowed Roberto Landolina to discover the different aspects of that mysterious land. From the chaotic skyscrapers of the capital to the wild nature dotted with small settlements of nomadic shepherds. A journey of a thousand shades seasoned by starry night skies and breathtaking views. All documented by photos and by blog of Roberto himself where it is possible to relive, at least in part, his extraordinary experience.
The travels of Roberto Landolina
Not only Mongolia, the young traveler has various experiences in his curriculum. Among the most important is the journey in Iceland in the summer of 2014. Also in that case Roberto opted for a healthy and non-polluting bicycle. And even in that case it was a full immersion with mother nature. 1500 kilometers on Icelandic land in the company of a tent, a map and a compass to orient yourself. Just like the explorers of yore did. A long journey that was possible to follow with the live broadcasts on the Facebook page of the University of Eastern Piedmont, which supported Roberto from day one.
In 2013 it was the mountain range in Corsica its destination. Two hundred kilometers covered on foot in 14 days. Always with a tent and always alone. Because for Roberto traveling alone is the best way to measure himself with the world and with himself.
