In the Veneto region, the situation is extremely critical. The Civil Protection has issued ared alert weather due to the imminent danger of flooding. The decision was made following the persistent adverse weather conditions that have occurred since the beginning of the week. The bad weather is putting several areas of the country at risk, highlighting in particular the severity of the hydrogeological risk.

Red weather alert: what to know

Wednesday 28 February was marked by intense meteorological events, especially in Northern Italy, with the Veneto and the province of Vicenza which suffered heavy rains. The Bacchiglione and Retrone rivers exceeded critical levels, causing flooding in numerous areas, although the damage was fortunately limited.

Meanwhile, in South Tyrol, the heavy snowfalls generated an emergency situation with an avalanche that hit Racines di Dentro, causing one victim and two serious injuries.

Also in other areas, such as in Arabba in province of Belluno, avalanche-related accidents occurred, but fortunately without loss of life.

Despite a temporary respite from bad weather in the North, with the exception of Emilia Romagna and Piedmont, a cyclone coming from Sicily continues to cause meteorological instability, maintaining high alert for the risk of adverse events.

The regions affected by the alerts

The weather forecast indicates another turbulent day, especially in the Centre, with widespread rainfall and thunderstorms expected along the Adriatic sectors.

On the Tyrrhenian side, however, some clearings are expected. Weather instability is also expected in eastern Sardinia, Sicily, Basilicata and Puglia intense showers.
