A new salivary test to detect the coronavirus, also for those asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic subjects; four Italian researchers developed it.

Coronavirus, the salivary swab for children arrives

It has the same reliability as the molecular nasopharyngeal swab, but is less invasive and therefore great for the little ones. The molecular saliva test for Covid-19, developed by the group coordinated by Gianvincenzo Zuccotti of the State University of Milan, is made up of four researchers, Elisa Borghi, Daniela Carmagnola, Claudia Dellavia and Valentina Massa. In addition to being established researchers, they are mothers of school-age children. The aim is to solve the problem of Coronavirus diagnoses in children, in order to avoid those annoyances deriving from swabs in the nose.

New salivary test for children, the result in 24 hours

The test, suitable not only for children, but also for adults, has been optimized on the basis of a protocol from Yale University; then modified by the four researchers of the State. The saliva sample is collected with a small cotton roll under the tongue. The result arrives in 24 hours. Both nasopharyngeal and salivary swabs detect virus genes and are 94% reliable. Rapid saliva tests, on the other hand, are 80% reliable and detect antigens. As for the result, this is done in 15 minutes.
