A hidden treasure has re-emerged from the waters of Lago Arancio, a Sambuca, in Sicily. This is the Mazzallakkar fortress which, as if by magic, has returned to show itself above the water level. A stone building now admirable in the Sicilian village, in the province of Agrigento. Its history is ancient, dating back more than a thousand years ago, to the time when the city of Zabut was founded by a colony of Arabs.

Mazzallakkar fortress, history

Some historians trace the construction of the Mazzallakkar fortress back to830 d. C., indicating as its purpose that of a post station for caravans. On this front, however, there are conflicting interpretations. Others, in fact, consider its construction more recent than a few centuries.

The elements that would make its creation date back would refer to a pre-existing structure, on whose remains the fortress was later erected. A common practice, as evidenced by the Mother Church of Sambuca, built in 1400 on the basis of the ruins of the Arab castle that once dominated the village.

The coverage of the waters is not so dated, however, having occurred in the fifties (from the last century). At the time the state of conservation was excellent but it was decided to create an artificial reservoir in the valley known as "area of the mills ". The water thus completely submerged the historic building.

Why, then, is Mazzallakkar visible again today? The level of the lake has progressively lowered. If before the towers were partially visible, above the surface, now their structure is appreciable for the most part, as well as the fortified walls, returned to light. A rediscovered treasure that now the administration of the village intends to exploit as a tourist element. The fortress will therefore be made accessible to visitors.

The village of Sambuca

The village of Sambuca, in the province of Agrigento, is among the most beautiful and appreciated in the whole of Sicily and, therefore, in Italy. It is no coincidence, in fact, that in 2016 he established himself as the winner of "Village of the villages", which has prompted many tourists, especially Italians, to try their hand at discovering this magical place.

Excellent location for visitors, considering the few kilometers that separate this area from the sea of Menfi, as well as from the temples of the Archaeological Park of Selinunte and Sciacca. There are many elements to discover, from the cathedral to the Saracen neighborhood, true heart of the village. It has remained intact over time, characterized by narrow and winding streets. To enrich this area are the small courtyards, as well as the "purrere", or underground quarries brought to light in recent years.

The history of the village has its roots in the time of Arab domination. On that hill the Saracen emir Zabut decided to build his own castle, of which there is now no trace. It is on those stones, however, that the Belvedere terrace was built, which dominates the surrounding countryside, as well as the Madrice Church.

An intriguing project, started years ago, is that ofWidespread hotel. Some buildings in the historic center find new life thanks to the transformation into four-star tourist residences. A way to encourage foreign tourists to discover Sambuca, surrounded by history, without having to give up modern comforts.
