On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of Raffaello Sanzio, Royal Library of Turin will host the exhibition "In the name of Raphael". The exhibition will retrace 70 years of history of Italian design, thanks to 26 works of artists attributable to the circle of the master of Urbino. These include the Perugino, parmigianino, Julius Roman, Polidoro da Caravaggio e Jerome of Carpi. Each drawing will also be accompanied by a long caption explaining its contents. In the sign of Raphael is a project carried out in collaboration with Intesa Sanpaolo - Galleries of Italy and coordinated by the researcher Angelamaria Vinegar (Ashmolean Museum in Oxford). Started in 2020 (precisely the year of the five hundredth anniversary) this has only now been finalized with the inauguration of the last exhibition 29th April. The exhibition at the Royal Library will be open to all visitors until July 17 2022.
In the sign of Raphael: the three sections of the exhibition itinerary
As already mentioned, In the sign of Raphael is a unique journey through the drawings of the artists closest to master from the Marche region. The exhibition is divided into three main sections. The first, entitled "Perugino and Raphael's training in Umbria”, Includes some drawings by Perugino (Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci). Considered one of the greatest artists of his time, the "divine painterHe is also remembered for having been Raphael's teacher. At his workshop, the young painter from the Marche quickly learns the techniques that will make his style unique and unmistakable. The next section, "Raphael's followers in Rome during the years of papal commissions " instead it is dedicated to the artists who frequented Raphael's workshop in Rome during the years of the pontificate of Leo X. Among the best-known pupils of Raphael are Julius Roman, Perino del Vaga, Polidoro da Caravaggio, Baldassare Peruzzi e Vincent Tamagni.
The last section of the exhibition itinerary is instead entitled "The continuers of Raphael". Among these is a then twenty year old parmigianino (Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola) who, thanks to Raphael's study, changed his way of understanding and making art. Parmigianino, however, was not the only "continuer" of the master from Urbino. In the same years, in fact, painters such as Biagio Pupini e Baccio Badinelli, whose art was influenced precisely by the works of Raphael. At the end, In the name of Raphael he will also propose the reconstruction of a sheet obtained from three fragments, contained in the painter's notebook of models Jerome of Carpi. It is an artifact that, both in form and content, can tell a lot about the culture of Renaissance.
Rates and times of the exhibition
In the name of Raphael at the Royal Library of Turin it will be open from Tuesday to Sunday (time 10-19), until July 17. The ticket can be purchased at the ticket office Royal Museums, in the Royal Library, or on the official website coopculture.it, after checking availability. Fares, for the full price of the ticket, range from 10 € a 20 € (for the combination exhibition + Royal Museums). There are also reductions and free tickets, depending on the categories. In the name of Raphael it is an unmissable exhibition for all art lovers, but also for those who want to deepen this Renaissance cross-section of the history of drawing, strongly influenced by the touch and style of the master from the Marches.
