The 23-year-old Piedmontese Elisa Balsamo won the road cycling world championship in the elite women's category in Leuven.
For Italy it is the return to the absolute world title after 10 years, after that of Bronzini in Denmark in 2011.
“My companions have been fantastic, without them this would not have been possible. I am totally speechless. I can not believe. It's a dream after a very long season. The team was great. I beat Marianne Voss today. Crazy. At the last corner I just thought about going full throttle. Next year with this shirt it will be incredible. Thanks to all the team and staff. Here my boyfriend is at the finish line while my family is following me from home ”.
