The antibodies of the healed
In about 88 percent of people recovered from Covid-19, the antibodies in the blood remain for 6 months. This is indicated by the study conducted by the British biobank Uk Biobank, one of the largest in the world for studies on Covid. The British biobank analyzed biological samples from nearly 1700 people, the BBC reports. The UK Biobank collected blood, urine, saliva samples, genetic data and heart and brain tests from around half a million people. Men and women who have agreed to have their information analyzed to aid medical research.
Nearly 20 of these volunteers provided a blood sample every month between May 27 and December 4. Of these, 1699 tested positive for al SARS-CoV-2 around this time, indicating a past infection. Many of them had already tested positive for Coronavirus in the first month of the study, thus reiterating that the infection had occurred in the first pandemic wave. Six months later, it emerged that 88 percent of them still had the antibodies to virus detectable in the blood. This confirmed what was observed in smaller studies conducted on healthcare professionals.
Symptoms of Covid Patients
The survey also showed the most recurrent symptoms experienced by patients: 26 percent had cough, 28 percent fever, 43 percent lost taste or smell. While 40 percent had none of these symptoms and 20 percent were asymptomatic. In the group of those who had antibodies to Sars-Cov2, 13 percent were under 30, while 6,7 percent were over 70 years old.
“Although we cannot be sure how the presence of antibodies is linked to immunity - comments Naomi Allen, chief scientist of the UK Biobank - the results suggest that people can be protected from a new infection for at least 6 months after the first. A longer follow-up will allow us to determine how long this protection lasts ".
