Low temperatures trigger important physical discomforts that can become disabling

Frozen hands and feet, the tips of the nose and ears that seem to have turned to ice. Sometimes there is even pain. While for some it is enough to cover up, for others winter translates into a real torture that not even down jackets, gloves and hats can alleviate.
Our grandmothers often complained of "chilblains". But what are they?
In fact, ailments related to low temperatures can be more than one and are called acro vascular syndromes.

THEpernium erythema it is linked to an imperfect peripheral blood circulation, which causes an abnormal reaction to cold with burning and itching in the fingers. If you quickly go from cold to a warm environment, they can also become very painful, take on a deep red color until they become livid and sometimes even become covered with blisters or ulcers. The phenomenon, which can also extend to the nose and ears, is neutralized with the application of highly moisturizing creams and possibly, in the presence of ulcers, even antibiotic creams.

Raynaud's syndrome

Sometimes the "chilblains" represent the consequence of another very distinct problem, which affects women in a particular way. This is the Raynaud's syndrome. Also linked to poor peripheral blood circulation, it manifests itself with sudden and temporary changes in the color of the fingers and hands and feet. They can become cyanotic, bluish and swollen. The same can happen in the ears and nose. The triggering causes? The frost obviously but there are other factors that make the situation worse. For example, intense emotions, stress, smoking and improper eating habits.

Sometimes the disease is constitutional. Others, on the other hand, are secondary to immuno-rheumatological problems such as lupus erythematosus, progressive systematic sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Acrocyanosis: the third enemy of winter

Winter also deploys a third enemy called acrocyanosis. It is a problem that affects people of small build, especially children and teenagers. And in general all those who are predisposed to react abnormally to hot-cold stimuli. In this case, when the thermometer drops, hands, feet, wrists, ankles, ears and nose exposed to the cold become cold and sweaty at the same time, taking on a reddish color. But it is a manifestation destined to diminish or completely disappear with age.

Anti-chill strategies

Those who suffer a lot from the cold, in addition to covering themselves adequately, should avoid sudden temperature changes as much as possible. Stay away from easy remedies, worse than the disease, such as space heaters, electric heaters, or hot water bottles. It is also the case to banish smoking and follow a diet based on vegetables, legumes and fruit, whose antioxidant action has protective effects on the microcirculation.

The right hydration is crucial. It can be abounded with teas, herbal teas, juices or soups, to make the skin more elastic and resistant to external aggressions. They also help the massages, at the extremities, with camphorated petroleum jelly. In any case, leading an active life and playing sports is very effective in improving blood circulation and counteracting the discomfort associated with frost.
