From today 27 May until 5 November next, the Baths of Caracalla are hosting the exhibition 'Letizia Battaglia Senza Fine'. A heartfelt tribute to the Sicilian photographer, champion of civil rights, who passed away just over a year ago. “Letizia Battaglia represents an exemplary combination of civil commitment, social feeling and artistic gaze – explains Daniela Porro, Special Superintendent of Rome – and on the thirtieth anniversary of the attacks on San Giovanni in Laterano and San Giorgio al Velabro, the Superintendence is dedicating this exhibition to her. Thanks to this event, we are inaugurating two new rooms in the Baths of Caracalla, to demonstrate how its images tell an all-round story of an era, fully entering the history of the photography".

Joy Endless battle

The exposure 'Letizia Battle without end' includes 92 large format photographs and numerous documents summarizing fifty years of the photographic work (1971-2020) of the great photographer. The collection includes iconic, lesser-known and some previously unseen images. It is a tribute to the courageous and dogged work of the photographer, from the dawn of her career between Milan and Palermo until the last production, before his disappearance on April 13, 2022.

“With this exhibition, the spaces for use by visitors are widening – declares Mirella Serlorenzi, director of the site – the Superintendency has restored an original entrance to the western gymnasium. Furthermore, in the other room, with the tub, the heating system and a fragment of geometric mosaic have been identified”. The layout of the exhibition pays homage to another great artist, the architect Lina Bo Bardi. To her we owe the exhibitors in tempered glass plates of the Museo de Arte de São Paulo, in Brazil. And his famous cavaletes of 1968 inspired the exhibition structures of Letizia Battaglia's photographs.

The exhibition, curated by Paolo Falcone and organized by Electa in collaboration with the Letizia Battaglia Archive, is part of the Caracalla Festival 2023 of the Opera House. On 25 and 28 July and 1 August 2023 at the Teatro del Portico there will be meetings dedicated to the photographer and the anniversary of the attack. “I am excited – declared Francesco Giambrone, Superintendent of the Rome Opera House – that the Caracalla Festival hosts the Letizia Battaglia exhibition. A woman has dedicated her whole life to civil and political commitment and to photography”.
