Imagine a Roman consul just outside the Colosseum just before a gladiator battle. To capture the moment he decides to pull out a mobile phone and take a selfie with a hashtag. Well, pure science fiction. But from today you know that it is possible to take a nice photo with the Roman monuments behind them in their full splendor. This is thanks to Atavistic, the app capable of making our photos even more unique.

Atavistic: Ancient Rome seen with selfies

The Castelli Romani, the Imperial Forum, a stretch of the Via Appia or the Circus Maximus. These are just some of the many monuments reproduced in 3D by Atavistic. But how does it work? When we take the photo, the geolocation of our smartphone communicates the exact position to the app. Within seconds, this recreates behind us, thanks to algorithms provided by Microsoft, the monument, the street and the setting at the time of classical Rome. The Atavistic database has hundreds of historical monuments faithfully reproduced in their maximum splendor and day by day details and improvements are added. But in addition to Ancient Atavistic Rome, it aims to recreate all the greatest classic cities of Italy and Europe. And the first in the works are Athens and Paris.

The most innovative startup of 2016

The fathers of Atavistic are the Crocetti brothers, Riccardo, Massimiliano and Claudio, three young architects and computer scientists residing in Rome. They are joined by Jacopo Sementilli who collaborates with Albano Laziale as a computer engineer. Their project won the tender launched by the Lazio Region reserved for the most innovative Startups in the Cultural Heritage sector. Their idea is in fact the first to offer such a service, and the response given by the first users for the Beta version was a success. In the coming weeks it will be possible to download the app on our mobile phone to take selfies of the past. Just as if we were in the streets of Ancient Rome.
