Pope John Paul I, venerable servant of God will be blessed. It was the same Papa Francesco to authorize the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the decree concerning the miracle attributed to the intercession of Pope Luciani. Albino Luciani, therefore, will soon rise to the honors of the altars: for the beatification ceremony we only expect to know the date that will be fixed by Pope Bergoglio. Meanwhile, the community of Canale d'Agordo in the Belluno area, the birthplace of Albino Luciani, welcomes the great news with great satisfaction and exultation. Furthermore, the Pope Luciani Foundation is preparing the birthplace of the blessed pontiff so that it can be visited by the faithful. The last of the Italian popes of the twentieth century remained in history because his was one of the shortest pontificates, lasting only 33 days.

The miracle

The miracle attributed to Pope Luciani concerns the healing which took place on 23 July 2011 in Buenos Aires, of an eleven-year-old girl suffering from "severe acute inflammatory encephalopathy, refractory malignant epileptic state epilepticus, septic shock". The child was practically dying: the clinical picture was very serious, characterized by numerous daily crises and a very worrying bronchopneumonia. From the news and testimonies collected by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints it seems that the parish priest of the parish in the neighborhood where the sick child resided was the one who invoked the miracle, through the intercession of Pope Luciani.

Pope John Paul I will be blessed

Albino Luciani was born on 17 October 1912 in Forno di Canale (now Canale d'Agordo), in the province of Belluno. He ends his earthly life on September 28, 1978 in the Vatican after having ruled for only 33 days on the chair of Peter. The son of a socialist worker, he worked for a long time as an emigrant in Switzerland. He received priestly ordination in 1935 and in 1958 he was appointed bishop of Vittorio Veneto. Participates in the work of the Second Vatican Council, the great council that represents a milestone in the history of the modern Church. Paul VI at the end of 1969 appoints him patriarch of Venice and in March 1973 makes him cardinal.

On his episcopal coat of arms the word "humilitas" (humility). Not just a word but a philosophy of life: in fact he is a pastor who lives with sobriety and modesty and who is always close to the poor and the workers. On August 26, 1978 Pope Paul IV died and he was succeeded by him: Albino Luciani, elected after only one day of conclave. The white smoke that rises from the Sistine Chapel makes the Catholic world rejoice as it greets the new vicar of Christ on earth. But, after just over a month, the world Church finds itself celebrating a great mourning. John Paul I was found lifeless on the morning of September 29, 1978 in one of his rooms in the apostolic palace in the Vatican. Only 33 days but it was enough to make the pope of humility a man of God, in the odor of holiness.
