On November 4, 1918, during the First World War, the announcement of the Victory Bulletin was issued by the army general Armando Diaz. Even if the so-called "Battle of Vittorio Veneto”, The latest clash between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The attack of the Italian army on Monte Grappa and on the Piave seemed to have failed.

In the Chamber of Deputies, the Minister of the Treasury Francesco Saverio Nitti launched a terrible accusation against the President of the Council of Ministers of the Kingdom of Italy and Minister of the Interior Victor Emmanuel Orlando defined "The President of Victory " : “The offensive is broken. A disaster is looming and you are responsible for it ”.

What happened on November 4th 1918?

By now the Austro-Hungarian Empire was starving. His army did not have the strength to fight back. His soldiers dropped their weapons and began a retreat. Which soon became a serious defeat.

On 29 October an Austro-Hungarian delegation led by General Viktor Weber Edler Von Webenau arrived in Padua at Villa Giusti. In order to negotiate the surrender with an Italian delegation led by General Pietro Badoglio. The negotiations lasted several days.

On October 31st the Austro-Hungarian Empire tried not to hand over its fleet to the Italians, giving it instead to the new state of Yugoslavia. On November 1st, the raiders entered into action with the Mas, torpedo-armed motorboats of our Navy. These sank, in the port of Pula, the twin battleships Viribus Unitis and Tegetthoff and the steamship Wien.

In the meantime, an armistice was signed at Villa Giusti on 3 November which provided for the immediate cessation of hostilities. The king of Italy Vittorio Emanuele III, on the same day, landed in Trieste from the torpedo boat Audace and crossed the streets of the liberated city by car, applauded by an immense crowd of citizens, mad with joy.

The Victory Bulletin

Il 4 November the Italian Supreme Command issued the historic Victory Bulletin, which read: “The war against Austria-Hungary is won. The Austro-Hungarian army is annihilated ”.

Every year, to commemorate the event, the National Unity and Armed Forces Day.
