Anna Grassellino, from Marsala to the conquest of the States

After graduating with honors in Marsala, he studied electronic engineering in Pisa with a thesis in microelectronics. And the meeting in 2004 in Batavia (Chicago) during an internship at Fermilab with physicist Nigel Lockyer. From there he moved to America to work on research on superconducting radiofrequency technology. With the start of work in the States, Anna Grassellino soon became one of the female scientists more established internationally. A talent that did not go unnoticed even by President Barack Obama who in 2017 awarded her with the "Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers", recognition for young professionals of scientific research.

The further turning point this year: at the end of August she was chosen by the US government to lead the “Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center in Chicago”. A project with a large funding, 200 scientists to coordinate and aimed at developing an advanced quantum computer in the world. And precisely in an interview with the magazine "D" of Repubblica, Anna Grassellino explained her work.

Try to understand the universe

With a big smile, Anna Grassellino explained her work is "Understand the universe around us". Understanding what the universe is made of, particles. He works a lot in the laboratory to improve knowledge and as a director he is responsible for coordinating activities to find new young professionals and "write" the future of science.

His research on the quantum computer

His project is based on the quantum computer that will have a greater impact for research and computing. It is the commitment he carries out every day at Fermilab where he works and where he deals with research on high energy physics. Anna Grassellino is the mother of three children, she is married and her family followed her in this important position. A woman, Italian pride, like many others, who left our country to work abroad. She says she is proud of the new position despite this difficult period. "We will be more than 200 researchers from around the world and with an important part also from Italy - explains Anna Grassellino -. I feel thrilled to have been chosen with our group ".

He feels part of Italy and continues to collaborate with many scientists. "Return to Italy permanently - says - why not maybe with an ambitious project like this ".

Women can give so much to science, says Anna Grassellino. "Do not be afraid”He then says to pursue a scientific career. She is an example of this, she is a testimonial of how we can successfully establish ourselves internationally.
