At the Mart (Museum of modern and contemporary art) in Rovereto, over 4 works inspired by Giotto's art are on display until 200 June. The exhibition, called "Giotto and the twentieth century", presents works by modern and contemporary artists inspired by Giotto, the master who revolutionized medieval painting, in a journey between the past and the present.

The itinerary begins with a large immersive installation that reproduces the Scrovegni Chapel of Padua, Giotto's absolute masterpiece. Through sophisticated video projections you can find yourself inside the most faithful copy of the famous fourteenth century fresco cycle, UNESCO heritage. The exhibition continues among works by great XNUMXth-century authors who share a passion for the figure of Giotto, studied and taken as a model of perfection and spirituality. In the early twentieth century Carlo Carrà, Mario Sironi and Arturo Martini, but also Gino Severini, Massimo Campigli, Achille Funi, Ubaldo Oppi, trace in Giotto the main witness of an eternity to look at.

A few decades later, Giotto's teachings influenced the work of some protagonists of Italian art such as Giorgio Morandi, Fausto Melotti, Mario Radice, Lucio Fontana. But also the work of great international artists such as Henri Matisse, Yves Klein, Mark Rothko, Josef Albers and Tacita Dean. The exhibition closes with another large immersive installation: a room of pure, luminous blue. It is a famous work by the contemporary American James Turrel, master of light and colour, scholar of perception. Through pure abstraction, the work recalls the spirituality that art historians and artists have attributed to Giotto.

Mart

With "Giotto and the twentieth century", the Mart confirms the attention to the comparisons between ancient and contemporary, thus maintaining the line of investigation desired by the president Vittorio Sgarbi. The project comes from an idea of ​​Vittorio Sgarbi who is president of the Museum.
