Europe is ready to say goodbye to masks on the plane, or at least the obligation to wear them. This is part of a general global trend to limit forms of prevention against Covid. It's time to go back to normality. Having said that, even though the spaces are limited, airplanes remain among the safest indoor places ever, considering the ventilation system present.

Stop the masks on the plane

EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency) has decided that from 16 May it will no longer be mandatory to wear masks both at EU airports and on airplanes traveling to and from EU countries. A decision taken in agreement with the ECDC (European Center for Disease Prevention and Control). A big step forward is therefore being made towards the normalization of travel, which is crucial for a new increase in business in the tourism sector.

Does this mean that we don't have to have a mask with us? No! It is always necessary to have one or more with you. The reason is quickly explained. You may have to wear it if the obligation exists in the country of departure or arrival. Considering how it is still mandatory in certain circumstances, leaving completely unprepared would be inconsiderate.

This easing of measures, EASA and ECDC explain, it is possible thanks to the improvement of the general epidemiological situation. The high rate of vaccination has made it possible to achieve levels of immunity of the population that are satisfactory to say the least. EASA executive director Patrick Ky advised passengers who were sneezing or coughing to wear it to protect others. Considering how difficult it is to act so quickly during a sudden sneeze, it is reasonable to think that it is a good habit to use the mask in case of general flu symptoms. Something that has been happening in Asia for a long time, where the mask is used more to protect others from oneself than vice versa.
