One of the most beautiful villages in the province of Treviso is Cison di Valmarino, nestled in the magnificent valley between Vittorio Veneto and Follina. There is no certainty about the origin of the name. It is hypothesized that it derives from the Latin caesum "cut", understood as reclaimed and deforested territory, which happened thanks to the Cistercian monks. The town boasts very ancient origins: it has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as demonstrated by some Paleolithic and Mesolithic findings. Since 2019 he has been part of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

Cison di Valmarino, the castle

From the castle, to the heart of the village, up to the street of the mills

Cison di Valmarino is dominated by the imposing Castelbrando. The manor, whose first construction dates back to Roman times, was equipped with walls only in the Middle Ages, thanks to the family From Camino. It subsequently passed under the control of Venice, which assigned it to the family for merit Brandolini, who had it enlarged in 1500. It offers a spectacular view of the surrounding territories and, since the end of the 90s, has housed an elegant hotel inside.

The historic center is very beautiful, the fulcrum of which is represented by Piazza Roma. The most interesting buildings from an architectural point of view stand here. I am an example of this Barbi Palace, seat of the municipality, the theater and the Loggia, Vintage Radio Museum. The churches are also unmissable. Among these, the archpriest's one stands out Santa Maria Assunta, from the 700th century. Not far from the historic center, you can walk along a beautiful nature trail that follows the Rujo stream.

along the water route

The path, named “Via dei mulini” or “Via dell’acqua”, leads to Penne Mozze Forest. In this place, in 1972, 2000 steles were placed in memory of the Alpine soldiers who fell in the war. The route is suitable for adults and children aged 10 and over, and allows you to admire the extraordinary natural beauty of these places. Near the forest, there is the Cyclamen cave, where stalactites and stalagmites can be seen.

The cellars and quality products

The village of Cison di Valmarino is also famous for its cellars, created by the Brandolini family in place of the ancient stables, and for the excellent Prosecco that is produced in this land. It is also a country where craftsmanship is still a thriving activity. Note is the fair “Living Craftsmanship”, which takes place annually in the month of August, in which many artisans participate who create valuable traditional artefacts on site.

Cison di Valmarino, craftsmanship

In the municipality, as in the entire province of Treviso, many IGP and DOCG specialties are produced, including late radicchio, white asparagus, chestnuts, variegato di Castelfranco. In particular, the Cison di Valmarino area is famous for the production of Follina cured meats.
