Un meteorite it would have fallen a few days ago in Sardinia, particularly near Armungia, a small village of 400 inhabitants 65 km from Cagliari.

The meteorite

The Prisma-Inaf network, the first Italian network for the systematic surveillance of meteors and the atmosphere, has reported the presence of what in scientific jargon is called "fireball” and indicates the light trail due to the fall of a meteorite, landed a few kilometers from the town of Armungia, in Sardinia. In fact, we know that when a meteorite comes into contact with the atmosphere at very high speed, it ignites and a trail is generated, detected by two instruments.

Data

According to scientists, these would be its characteristics: the final mass of the meteorite is around 200 grams and its diameter is approximately 4-5 centimeters. At a height of approximately 28 kilometers the fireball then died out determining what is called the dark flight phase during which the object continues to travel; to date what remains of it has not yet been found and this arouses attention. According to the reconnaissance carried out, one should find ad 1,1 kilometers north-west of the center of Armungia. The fireball fell on October 8 at 21.53pm.

What to do to report it if you find it

Anyone who finds the remains, probably in the form of pebbles, must immediately contact the Prisma experts with these instructions: send photos and coordinates to the e-mail address [email protected].

Alternatively, you can directly call the national coordinator of Prisma, Daniele Gardiol of the Inaf-Astrophysics Observatory of Turin on 3491977591".

Previously, large meteorites had fallen in other areas of Italy, in particular Ascoli Piceno and in 2022 Campobasso last August 5.
