First press conference of the year by Prime Minister Draghi
"A year to be faced with realism and confidence, but above all with unity". Thus began the premier reiterating that the approach to the pandemic is different than in the past. "We want to be cautious and we want to minimize the effects of the pandemic crisis, especially on young people who have suffered from it from a psychological and training point of view". On the reopening of the schools Draghi asserted: “I thank the minister and all the school staff for returning to school today. Suspending classes makes no sense if the kids are free to go to other places for socializing ". The premier then ruled: “The only weapon against Covid is vaccination. We cannot deny that much of the problems we have are due to the fact that there are still many unvaccinated. In this regard, I invite Italians who have not been vaccinated to do so as soon as possible! ".
Draghi then highlighted: “Thanks to vaccination, the situation is very different from the past. The economy is growing by 6 percent; the schools reopened last April. Just as they reopened today, after Christmas, like those of all other European countries. Government policies are consistent with this strategy. We were among the first to start the vaccination campaign, more and more intensified. Currently, it is proven that the spread of the virus has effects especially among the unvaccinated population ". On the much discussed vaccination obligation introduced in recent days, the prime minister expressed himself as follows: “We did it on the basis of data that tells us that those over the age of 50 are at greater risk. And let's not forget that two / thirds of ICUs are occupied by unvaccinated people. We have faced many difficult challenges and we have overcome them thanks to the collaboration of all. Today we have good reasons to hope that we will also be able to overcome this pandemic phase but - reiterated Draghi - there must be respect for the rules, prudence, trust and above all unity ”.
