Starting today and until September 9th, the Lido di Venice hosts the 80th Venice International Film Festival, organized by the Venice Biennale and directed by Alberto Barbera. This year the event is dedicated to Gina lollobrigida, the well-known actress and diva who left us on January 16th.

Caterina Murino is the godmother

Godmother of the International Film Festival is Cagliari Caterina Murino, actress, former model and showgirl, who will officiate the inauguration at 19 pm today. She arrived at the Lido in the early afternoon of yesterday, with a green suit, she posed later on the beach in an evening dress with a black petticoat studded with crystals, both signed Giorgio Armani.

23 films in competition

The 80th Venice International Film Festival is conditioned by the union strike of authors and actors in America (and England) which will lead to some major absences by Hollywood stars. However, while actors such as Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone and Michael Fassbender will be missing, many others will be in the front row presenting their films. 23 are those in the race. They will be screened in the original language with subtitles in Italian and English.

Of these, six are directed by Italians: Commanding, by Edoardo De Angelis; I Captain, by Matteo Garrone; Finally the dawn, by Saverio Costanzo; Aeneas, by Pietro Castellitto; Lugo, by Giorgio Rights; Slow downby Stefano Sollima. Seven, however, the American ones: Origin, by Ava DuVernay; The Killer by David Fincher; Priscilla, by Sofia Coppola; Teacher, by Bradley Cooper; Ferrari by Michael Mann; Poor Creatures! by Yorgos Lanthimos; Memoryby Michael Franco. The other films in competition are: Bastard, by Nikolaj Arcel; Dogman, by Luc Besson; The Beast, by Bertrand Bonello; Hors-Saison, by Stéphane Brizé; Aku wa sonzai Shinai, by Ryusuke Hamaguchi; Green border, by Agnieszka Holland; Die theory von allem, by Timm Kröger; Countby Pablo Larraín; Kobieta Z…, by Malgorzata Szumowska and Michal Englert; Holly, of Fien Torah.

Promote the diffusion of international cinema

The Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica aims to promote the diffusion of international cinema in all its forms of art, entertainment and industry, in a spirit of freedom and dialogue. One section is dedicated to the enhancement of restoration operations of classic films to contribute to a better knowledge of the history of cinema. The official prizes will be awarded during the awards ceremony on 9 September. The main one is the Golden Lion to the best movie.
