When we think of Santa Claus' house, our thoughts inevitably fly to Lapland, in northern Finland, which is home to an entire village where the most beloved grandfather in the world lives together with his elves. Few know that even in Italy, and precisely in Senorbì, in the province of Cagliari (Sardinia), there is a house with a garden dedicated to the famous "Santa Claus", approximately 500 square meters large and brightly lit by 50 thousand LEDs. The beautiful home is equipped with a letterbox into which children can place their requests and a large nativity scene.
Born from a wish of the Spiga couple
Santa's house, which is visited by around 200 people every day (almost 1.500 on weekends), is a real attraction now that the holidays are upon us. The house belongs to the Spiga couple, two seventy-year-olds who have always been passionate about Christmas, who for 15 years have been transforming their villa and the surrounding garden into a world so magical that it seems like something straight out of a fairy tale.
He, Mr Ignazio Spiga, owner of a company that deals with electrical work, has also taken his passion outside the home. The lights turn on every day at 17pm and turn off at midnight, but in the days close to Christmas they always remain on. In this surreal place, children get "lost" among the thousands of lights and countless decorations, in an atmosphere made even more unique by the Christmas music.
In giving life to this world of enchantment and poetry, the Spiga family have realized a dream they have cultivated for some time. However, a dream not shared by their children. “Unfortunately – as Mr. Ignazio admitted to Ansa – my wife and I were unable to transfer this passion to our children. Every year I change something but it is a passion that has always existed. I started thinking about the project in March, then everything was dismantled after January 8th. The lights remain lit for approximately 50 days, absorbing only 2kW".
Every year offers many surprising innovations
Santa Claus' house is enriched year after year with new attractions and embellished with new lights, so much so that Mr. Ignazio is thinking of creating something truly surprising. “I would like to create an artificial snowfall on set days – he admitted – and I have already purchased a nebulizer”. Meanwhile, this year, the novelties are represented by some little animals and a large luminous reindeer.
