What are the best Italian universities according to Cwur data?

From what emerged in the2024 edition of the annual ranking drawn up by Center World University Rankings (Cwur), in the context ofuniversity education on a global scale, Italy is experiencing a decrease in its competitiveness.

Even if the 67 Italian universities remain on the list, 75% of them lost positions, as in the case ofLa Sapienza University of Romto what recorded a loss of eight positions, occupying 124th place. The same declining situation is recorded for two other prestigious universities, lthe University of Padua and the University of Milan, which go from 171st to 173rd place and from 180th to 186th place respectively.

This year, only 16 Italian universities have improved their performance compared to last year due to the decrease in research results.

The study carried out by Cwur takes into consideration four main criteria: quality of education (25%), employability (25%), quality of teachers (10%) and research (40%). Out of a total of 20.966 universities ranked, the top positions were awarded to the 'Global 2000' list, which includes academic and research institutions from 94 countries.

Competition with Chinese universities, which are rapidly growing thanks to continuous investments in the higher education sector, is putting not only Italian but also American and European universities into crisis.

According to Nadim Mahassen, president of the Center for World University Rankings, it is evident that Italy, without further public investments in research and development, risks further compromising its future performance.
