Welcome to the South 15 years later
A decade and a half has passed since “Welcome to the South” won the hearts of Italian viewers. The film, directed by Luca Miniero, was a Italian remake of the French original “Down in the North” by Dany Boon. Alessandro Siani played the role of the postman Mattia of Santa Maria di Castellabate, in picturesque Cilento, while Claudio Bisio he took on the role of Alberto Colombo, the Milanese office manager of the Italian Post Office. These two characters, initially divided by cultural differences and regional stereotypes, became friends in an unexpected way, offering comic ideas and reflections on gap between North and South of Italy.
The details of the script are still under development, but the enthusiasm of the two main actors, Siani and Bisio, is palpable. In an interview with Gianluca Gazzoli for his podcast, Claudio Bisio declared: “Yes, we're thinking 'Welcome Back to the South – 15 Years Later'. There's no script yet, nothing. Alessandro and I also took different paths, but it seemed to both of us that it could be the right moment. "
Working on the script
The return of Mattia and Alberto is an idea that could soon take shape, and Alessandro Siani has confirmed that there is the will and the idea to make it happen. Now, the next step is to work on the script and bring new and fresh gags, as repeating the old ones is not an option.
A significant element of the success of the original film was the setting of Campania, which at the time was trying to redeem itself from negative stereotypes linked to rubbish and crime. There beauty and authenticity of the region they helped make the film a success, going beyond prejudice.
So, get ready for another fun-filled journey between North and South, as the third installment of “Welcome to the South” is on the way, and this time it might be even more hilarious and surprising.
