Among the many doubts, perplexities, fears and "madness" of this period, one thing is certain: we will go into history! It is up to us to decide how we will be remembered, how Italy will be remembered.
A historic moment
We are living in a moment that none of us expected. A nation under "house arrest", due to a new virus that arrived from afar, but which in one way or another has revolutionized and will revolutionize everyone's life. It looks like a TV series or a video game, but it is the incredible reality we are experiencing. Hopefully, this is a unique time in our lives, and that none of us will have to go through a similar period again. Covid-19 is certainly not the first pandemic to explode after the war but it is certainly the one that has affected most parts of the world, given today's globalization. Fortunately, it is estimated that in the future the risk of a pandemic will always be lower, thanks to advances in technology and above all, to the development of many areas, which will lead to an improvement in hygiene in certain areas of the globe.
We will go into history
In the decades to come, everyone will remember and talk about that famous 2020, where life as we knew it was cut short. Everyone will talk about how they went through the quarantine, perhaps exaggerating in the stories to the children and grandchildren. But what will truly remain in history will be something else. Italy will be judged (now and in the future) on how it defends itself from this invisible attack. The numbers will be arbitrators: the number of infected people, the damage to the economy, the number of victims. And then we must do everything to ensure that these numbers are minimized as much as possible. In the future people will have to say "But do you remember how Italy reacted!"
We're on the right path
It must be said that Italy is not at all disfiguring in front of an enemy as subtle as it is powerful. We were the first European country to be seriously affected, and while the world mocked us, the WHO and other competent bodies praised us. As I am writing this article, Italy is experiencing fewer and fewer infections, approaching by leaps and bounds towards the end of the tunnel. Which in many European countries, unfortunately, still seems far away. So let's continue like this, because we are showing everyone how to deal with this problem. There solidarity, the sacrifices, humility and unity of a fighting people. Where a call from the civil protection for 300 volunteer nurses was answered in 8000. A country where doctors have Armani-branded coats and respirators are made by Ferrari. A country that after a normal initial dismay has collaborated, encouraging, supporting and helping others.
The Renaissance
"There is no night long enough not to allow the Sun to rise again the next day." And it will be so. On the other hand, it has already happened, after the Middle Ages, il Renaissance of Italy. After hitting rock bottom, Italy will rise. People will return to bars, restaurants, shops. This virus may have been a crossroads for Italy, a shock as strong as necessary to get out of a general indolence that had lasted for years. We can leave, and let's do it by buying Italian, eating Italian, and traveling to Italy. We help our own companies, not out of conservatism or out of spite against an EU that is perhaps not very helpful. We help ours companies out of solidarity between Italians, to take advantage of a unique moment and to get out of a crisis that did not start in March 2020, but many, too many years ago.
Come on, let's continue to respect the rules and demonstrate this great spirit of solidarity. Let's make sure that 2020 is remembered, yes for the Coronavirus, but also for a new Renaissance in Italy. We will go into history, proudly.
